Receive, Turn, Fire!

Shooting after a turn — control + pivot + shoot

Objective: Players practise receiving a rolled ball, turning their body toward goal, and shooting.

Outcomes

  • Players can receive a pass, pivot 180 degrees, and shoot in one flowing movement.
  • Players can keep the ball under control when they turn.
  • Players can choose which direction to turn based on where the goal is.

Equipment

  • 1 size-3 ball per player
  • 6 small flat-cone goals
  • 16 cones
  • pinnies

Run of show

  1. 1. Arrival Free Play

    5m

Set up: Three goals around the area. Players each with a ball, back to the goal.

How to run it: Players stand facing away from the goal, drop the ball to their feet, quickly turn around, and shoot. Explore — which foot turns faster? Which direction is best?

    • Let them figure out turning on their own first.
    • Praise any player who turns cleanly.

  2. 2. Warm-Up Game: Musical Islands

    8m

Set up: Scatter six large hula hoops or cone squares as 'islands' in the area. All players with a ball.

How to run it: Players dribble around the islands while music plays. When music stops, dribble onto an island and sit on your ball. Remove one island each round. No one is out — share islands. Play six rounds.

    • Change direction with the ball when approaching islands.
    • Look up to find the nearest island before music stops.
    • Cooperation over competition — sharing is celebrated.

  3. 3. Skill Theme Game: Turn and Shoot

    12m

Set up: Pairs. One player (feeder) stands 5 yards behind the other (shooter) who faces away from a small goal 6 yards ahead.

How to run it: Feeder rolls ball to the shooter's feet. Shooter traps it, turns to face the goal, and shoots — all in one flowing go. Count goals in 90-second bursts. Swap roles. Play four rounds each.

    • One touch to stop the ball, then turn — don't dribble before turning.
    • After the trap, pivot on the standing foot and shift weight forward.
    • Eyes to the goal as soon as the turn starts.

  4. 4. Small-Sided Games: 3v3 Turn to Score

    15m

Set up: Two 3v3 games. Goals each end. No goalkeeper.

How to run it: Any goal scored after the scorer receives a pass and turns is worth double cheers. Play normally — no restrictions — but coach narrates any receive-turn-shoot out loud to highlight it.

    • Reward the movement, not just the goal.
    • Encourage players to ask for the ball with their back to goal.
    • Keep the commentary exciting.

  5. 5. Cool-Down & High-Fives

    5m

Set up: Players stand with a ball, back to a cone.

How to run it: Coach rolls the ball to each player's feet one at a time. Player traps, turns, and rolls the ball back to the coach — no shooting, just the movement. Each player gets three turns. High-five after each.

    • Slow and smooth — relaxed cool-down tempo.
    • Reinforce the sequence: receive, turn, shoot (today it's receive, turn, return).
🏠 Take-home challenge: Have someone stand behind you and roll you the ball. Practise turning to face them and rolling it back — do it 10 times!

Turn & Blast Festival

Shooting after a turn — mini-match festival

Objective: Players use the receive-turn-shoot sequence in live mini-match play.

Outcomes

  • Players can use a turn to create a shooting opportunity in a game.
  • Players can play quickly after receiving the ball.
  • Players can recognise when to turn toward goal vs pass to a teammate.

Equipment

  • 1 size-3 ball per player
  • 8 small flat-cone goals
  • 20 cones
  • 2 sets of pinnies

Run of show

  1. 1. Arrival Free Play

    5m

Set up: Goals up. Balls free. Coach rolls balls across the space.

How to run it: Players chase any ball the coach rolls, receive it while still moving, and shoot. Coach keeps rolling balls in so there's always action.

    • Keep the supply of rolling balls constant.
    • Celebrate every shot attempt.

  2. 2. Warm-Up Game: Robot Freeze

    8m

Set up: All players with a ball in the area.

How to run it: Players dribble as robots. Coach calls 'FREEZE!' — everyone stops and balances with one foot on the ball. Coach calls a direction ('FACE NORTH!' or 'FACE THE RED GOAL!') — players pivot to face it. Hold for 3 seconds, then dribble again.

    • Clean stops — no rolling away.
    • Quick pivots — reinforce the turning motion.
    • Make the direction calls fun and varied.

  3. 3. Skill Theme Game: Two-Touch Knockout

    12m

Set up: Groups of three: one feeder, two shooters. One small goal 6 yards from the shooting spot.

How to run it: Feeder rolls to Shooter A: one touch to control, one touch to shoot. Then rolls to Shooter B: same. Count which shooter scores more in 90 seconds. Rotate feeder. Play four rounds.

    • Two touches maximum — receive and fire.
    • First touch should point the body toward goal.
    • Competitive but friendly — no gloating.

  4. 4. Small-Sided Games: Mini-Match Festival

    15m

Set up: Three 3v3 or 4v4 games on small pitches. Goals each end. No goalkeepers.

How to run it: Play three 5-minute games with rotations. Before each game, coach reminds: 'If you receive the ball, turn and shoot!' No rule — just a reminder. Celebrate any receive-turn-shoot out loud.

    • Narrate the action as it happens.
    • Keep rotations brisk between games.
    • Positivity all the way through.

  5. 5. Cool-Down & High-Fives

    5m

Set up: Players sit in a circle.

How to run it: Coach asks: 'Show me your best turn!' Each player stands, shows a spin on the spot, sits back down. Everyone applauds each player. Final club cheer.

    • Energetic and celebratory end.
    • Even the most modest spin gets applause.
🏠 Take-home challenge: Set up a goal at home, stand with your back to it, and have someone roll the ball to you. Turn and shoot — 10 times!
