Outside-of-Foot Dribbling – Technical
Ball Mastery & Dribbling
Objective: Players develop confident and deceptive use of the outside of the foot for dribbling and direction change.
Outcomes
- ✓Players can dribble with the outside of both feet
- ✓Players can cut inward using the outside of the foot to create shooting opportunities
- ✓Players can use the outside of the foot at pace without losing control
- ✓Players understand how the outside cut creates space for the stronger foot
Equipment
- 1 ball per player
- 20 cones
- 4 pinnies
- 2 small goals
Run of show
1. Arrival Ball Mastery
8mSet up: Free roam 20×20 yd.
How to run it: Players dribble using ONLY the outside of one foot for 60 seconds, then switch to the other. No inside-foot touches allowed. Coach corrects immediately if inside foot is used.
- ›Foot turned slightly inward so the outer edge contacts the ball
- ›Touch every 1–2 steps
- ›Ball pushed slightly to the outside of your running line

10mSet up: 8-cone straight line, 2 yds between cones.
How to run it: Players dribble the line using outside of foot only, curving around each cone. Two lengths right foot, two lengths left foot. Progress: alternate foot at each cone. Finish with ankle rolls and calf raises.
- ›Stay close to the cones – this trains fine control
- ›Smooth arc, not sharp zigzag

15mSet up: Player starts on the wing 15 yds from goal; cone defender on the inside; goal in front.
How to run it: Player dribbles forward; at the cone defender, uses outside of foot to cut inside; shoots with laces. Three reps right wing, three reps left wing. Progress: add a real passive defender. Ask: 'What does the outside cut do to the defender?'
- ›Outside cut brings ball onto stronger foot for shooting
- ›Cut across the defender's body – close the gap
- ›Touch after the cut should be shooting position immediately
- ›Bend the knee of the plant foot on the cut

15mSet up: Teams of 3; 20-yd relay lane; 5 cones to weave.
How to run it: Players must weave through cones using outside foot only. First team to have all three players complete the course wins. Penalty: inside touch = restart that cone. Two rounds right foot, one round left foot.
- ›Keep body over the ball on outside touches
- ›Speed up as you become more comfortable
- ›Left foot: most players will be slower – that's normal, keep practising
5. Small-Sided Game – 4v4 Wide Play
17mSet up: 35×28 yd pitch; large side channels (5 yds wide each side); small goals.
How to run it: Play 4v4. In the wide channels, only outside-of-foot dribbling is permitted. Central play is free. Award 2 points for a goal set up from a wide channel outside-foot run.
- ›Wide channel is your territory – use it
- ›Outside foot pull means your hips and shoulders stay wider, giving you a bigger view of the field
- ›Defenders in wide channel: jockey, wait for the mistake

5mSet up: Circle.
How to run it: Static stretches. Ask: 'Name a professional player who uses the outside of their foot a lot.' Discussion. Coach names examples if needed (Robben, Messi left-foot outside, Dembélé).
- ›Modelling: watching players who use the skill
- ›Outside-foot dribbling sets up the inside-cut – they come as a pair
