Outside-of-Foot Dribbling – Technical

Ball Mastery & Dribbling

Objective: Players develop confident and deceptive use of the outside of the foot for dribbling and direction change.

Outcomes

  • Players can dribble with the outside of both feet
  • Players can cut inward using the outside of the foot to create shooting opportunities
  • Players can use the outside of the foot at pace without losing control
  • Players understand how the outside cut creates space for the stronger foot

Equipment

  • 1 ball per player
  • 20 cones
  • 4 pinnies
  • 2 small goals

Run of show

  1. 1. Arrival Ball Mastery

    8m

Set up: Free roam 20×20 yd.

How to run it: Players dribble using ONLY the outside of one foot for 60 seconds, then switch to the other. No inside-foot touches allowed. Coach corrects immediately if inside foot is used.

    • Foot turned slightly inward so the outer edge contacts the ball
    • Touch every 1–2 steps
    • Ball pushed slightly to the outside of your running line

  2. 2. Dynamic Warm-Up

    10m

Set up: 8-cone straight line, 2 yds between cones.

How to run it: Players dribble the line using outside of foot only, curving around each cone. Two lengths right foot, two lengths left foot. Progress: alternate foot at each cone. Finish with ankle rolls and calf raises.

    • Stay close to the cones – this trains fine control
    • Smooth arc, not sharp zigzag

  3. 3. Technical Practice – Outside Cut to Shoot

    15m

Set up: Player starts on the wing 15 yds from goal; cone defender on the inside; goal in front.

How to run it: Player dribbles forward; at the cone defender, uses outside of foot to cut inside; shoots with laces. Three reps right wing, three reps left wing. Progress: add a real passive defender. Ask: 'What does the outside cut do to the defender?'

    • Outside cut brings ball onto stronger foot for shooting
    • Cut across the defender's body – close the gap
    • Touch after the cut should be shooting position immediately
    • Bend the knee of the plant foot on the cut
    GKSA
Receive the pass, attack the goal, finishKeeperNeutral / serverBallAttackerConePassRun (off ball)Shot
  4. 4. Skill Game – Outside-Foot Relay Race

    15m

Set up: Teams of 3; 20-yd relay lane; 5 cones to weave.

How to run it: Players must weave through cones using outside foot only. First team to have all three players complete the course wins. Penalty: inside touch = restart that cone. Two rounds right foot, one round left foot.

    • Keep body over the ball on outside touches
    • Speed up as you become more comfortable
    • Left foot: most players will be slower – that's normal, keep practising
  5. 5. Small-Sided Game – 4v4 Wide Play

    17m

Set up: 35×28 yd pitch; large side channels (5 yds wide each side); small goals.

How to run it: Play 4v4. In the wide channels, only outside-of-foot dribbling is permitted. Central play is free. Award 2 points for a goal set up from a wide channel outside-foot run.

    • Wide channel is your territory – use it
    • Outside foot pull means your hips and shoulders stay wider, giving you a bigger view of the field
    • Defenders in wide channel: jockey, wait for the mistake

  6. 6. Cool-Down & Review

    5m

    Set up: Circle.

How to run it: Static stretches. Ask: 'Name a professional player who uses the outside of their foot a lot.' Discussion. Coach names examples if needed (Robben, Messi left-foot outside, Dembélé).

    • Modelling: watching players who use the skill
    • Outside-foot dribbling sets up the inside-cut – they come as a pair
🏠 Take-home challenge: Kick a ball against a wall using only the outside of your right foot 25 times, then 25 times with your left. Try to keep the ball on target.

Outside-of-Foot Dribbling – Applied

Ball Mastery & Dribbling

Objective: Players apply outside-of-foot skills in 1v1 situations and wide-channel game scenarios.

Outcomes

  • Players can beat a defender using an outside-foot cut in a 1v1
  • Players combine outside-of-foot dribbling with a previous move
  • Players create scoring opportunities from wide positions
  • Players demonstrate improved comfort with the weaker foot outside touch

Equipment

  • 1 ball per player
  • 20 cones
  • 8 pinnies
  • 4 small goals

Run of show

  1. 1. Arrival Ball Mastery

    8m

Set up: Free roam 20×20 yd.

How to run it: Free dribble combining outside-foot touches with any move from the previous weeks. On coach's call of a colour pinnie, two players wearing that colour do an immediate 1v1 for 10 seconds.

    • Stay alert between calls – game-like awareness
    • 1v1 trigger: get your body between ball and opponent immediately

  2. 2. Dynamic Warm-Up

    10m

Set up: Wide 15-yd channel; pairs.

How to run it: Player A dribbles on the outside-foot channel. B closes slowly. A performs outside-foot cut inside and finishes with a shot to a distant cone. Switch roles every 3 reps. Progress: B gives real pressure.

    • Commit to the outside run before the inside cut – sell the fake
    • Cut timing: when defender's feet are set

  3. 3. Technical Practice – 1v1 Wide Duel

    15m

Set up: 15×8 yd wide channel; goal at the end; attacker and defender.

How to run it: Attacker enters from the bottom corner; defender closes from the goal. Attacker must use outside-of-foot dribbling to get to the end line or shoot. Play 4 rounds per player; swap roles. Ask: 'What happened when you approached along the outside-foot side?'

    • Outside-foot approach draws defender to the outside – then cut inside
    • Sell the outside run with shoulder position
    • After the cut, first touch into shooting space
    • Shoot low and across the goal
    GKSA
Receive the pass, attack the goal, finishKeeperNeutral / serverBallAttackerConePassRun (off ball)Shot
  4. 4. Skill Game – 3v3 Wide Channels

    15m

Set up: 25×22 yd pitch with wide channels 4 yds wide; central area 14 yds wide. 3v3.

How to run it: Play free 3v3. Ball in wide channel: only outside-foot touches allowed. Ball in central area: free. A goal from a wide-channel cross or cut counts double.

    • Wide players: stay in your channel and be brave
    • Central players: make runs to receive the cut-back
    • Defenders: track wide runners early

  5. 5. Small-Sided Game – 5v5 Free Play

    17m

Set up: 35×28 yd pitch; goals.

How to run it: Free 5v5. Coach awards a 'skills chip' (small token) for every outside-foot dribble that beats a defender. Players keep their chips. Most chips at end of session earns a team point.

    • Chips make the stat visible and competitive
    • Both teams should push for chips, not just goals
    • Quality touch – chip only awarded for a genuine beat

  6. 6. Cool-Down & Review

    5m

    Set up: Circle.

How to run it: Full-body stretches. Each player shares one thing they are working on with their weaker foot. Coach affirms all answers and sets a group target for next session.

    • Weaker foot work is long-term – celebrate small improvements
    • Group targets build team culture
🏠 Take-home challenge: Dribble 20 yds using only the outside of your weaker foot, 10 times a day. Count your touches. Try to keep the ball within one step.
