Season Consolidation – All Themes in One Session

Full Consolidation: Q4 Themes

Objective: Players revisit and apply all Q4 themes — width, support, switching, defending, and transitions — in one unified session.

Outcomes

  • Players can name and demonstrate each Q4 tactical theme on request.
  • Players can switch between themes fluidly in a game context.
  • Players can coach a team-mate using the language of the quarter.
  • Players can reflect on which themes they have improved most and which need more work.

Equipment

  • 16 cones
  • 10 bibs
  • 8 balls
  • 2 full-size goals
  • 2 keepers

Run of show

  1. 1. Arrival Ball Mastery

    8m

Set up: Groups of four, one ball per group, 20×20 yd grid.

How to run it: Coach calls out any Q4 theme name: 'Width!', 'Switch!', 'Support!', 'Press!', 'Delay!', 'Counter!'. Players must immediately act it out as a group — spreading wide, switching the ball, pressing as a pair, etc. Six calls total.

    • Every theme has a clear physical action — know what yours is.
    • React together as a group — not individually.
    • If you are unsure what a theme means, watch what your group does.

  2. 2. Dynamic Warm-Up

    10m

Set up: Half-pitch. 6v0 possession pattern: two wide, one deep, one advanced, two midfielders. Ball moves through all positions.

How to run it: 6v0 passing sequence that hits every position: deep → midfielder → wide → midfielder → switch → wide → cross → finish. Four reps each side. Coach names the theme at each stage as the ball moves.

    • Every touch in this drill represents a concept from the quarter.
    • Emphasise timing of runs, not just ball movement.
    • Finish the sequence with a real effort — don't poke it in.

  3. 3. Technical Practice

    15m

Set up: 5v4 (+keeper) on half-pitch. Every two minutes, coach calls a theme. The attacking team must execute a goal using that theme. Defenders stay live throughout.

How to run it: Round 1 (two min): width theme — goals must come from wide areas. Round 2: switch theme — goal must follow a switch of play. Round 3: support theme — goal must use a support pass before shooting.

    • Adapt immediately to the new theme — the game does not stop.
    • Defenders: know the theme too — it tells you where to defend.
    • One theme flows into the next in real football.

  4. 4. Skill Game

    15m

Set up: 4v4 on 35×25 yd, two full goals. Teams earn one point per goal, plus one bonus theme point for each Q4 concept their goal clearly demonstrates.

How to run it: Coach observes and calls out themes after each goal: 'Switch, then cross, then first-time finish — three concepts in one goal!' Maximum of five theme points per goal.

    • The best moves in football use multiple concepts at once.
    • Don't force themes — let the game create them.
    • Every player on the pitch contributes to a multi-theme goal.

  5. 5. Small-Sided Game

    17m

Set up: 6v6 including keepers, 45×35 yd, two full goals.

How to run it: Free match, no constraints. This is a showcase of the quarter's learning. Coach observes only, making no interventions. Both teams play as independently as possible.

    • This is your chance to show what you have learned — trust yourself.
    • Make decisions, make mistakes, and learn from both.
    • Play with confidence — every theme you know is a weapon.

  6. 6. Cool-Down & Review

    5m

Set up: Players in a circle.

How to run it: Group static stretches. Coach goes around the circle and asks each player to name one Q4 theme they feel most confident with and one they want to improve.

    • Knowing your strengths and areas for growth is self-awareness.
    • Bring your best version to next week's festival — your club is watching.
🏠 Take-home challenge: Review your drawings, notes, and homework from the past twelve weeks. Pick the three biggest ideas you have learned. Write one sentence for each. Bring the list to the season finale.

Festival Preparation – Playing with Freedom

Full Consolidation: Q4 Themes

Objective: Players play freely and confidently, applying Q4 principles without prompting, ready for the season-end festival.

Outcomes

  • Players can play a full competitive match applying Q4 themes without coach instruction.
  • Players can communicate and organise themselves on the pitch.
  • Players can manage their own substitutions and roles as a squad.
  • Players can reflect positively on the season and identify their personal growth.

Equipment

  • 12 cones
  • 10 bibs
  • 8 balls
  • 2 full-size goals
  • 2 keepers

Run of show

  1. 1. Arrival Ball Mastery

    8m

Set up: Full squad together in the centre circle area. One ball per player.

How to run it: Players lead their own ball mastery for three minutes — coach says nothing. Players choose what to do. Then coach calls two players to lead: they pick the next challenge for the whole group.

    • Leadership in ball mastery means taking responsibility.
    • Choose something you feel confident leading.
    • This is what festival warm-ups will look like — players lead.

  2. 2. Dynamic Warm-Up

    10m

Set up: Players organise themselves into two teams for the session.

How to run it: Teams warm up independently — they choose their own warm-up movements. Coach watches only. After five minutes, players complete two cross-pitch sprints together.

    • Independence in warm-up reflects confidence as a team.
    • Look after each other — one player leads, others follow.
    • Sprint together — this is a team, not individuals.

  3. 3. Technical Practice

    15m

Set up: Two 5v5 games simultaneously on half-pitch each. Teams self-organise. No coach instruction during play.

How to run it: Free play for 15 minutes. Coach circulates but does not intervene. Any player who demonstrates a Q4 theme clearly gets a quiet acknowledgement — a tap on the shoulder.

    • Self-organisation is a sign of team maturity.
    • Solve problems on the pitch — don't wait for the coach.
    • This is what playing for Austin Hearts FC will feel like.

  4. 4. Skill Game

    15m

Set up: Full squad 7v7 or 8v8 on the full pitch, two full goals, keepers included.

How to run it: A proper pre-festival match. Teams self-select. Coach manages the game but does not coach — only keeps time and ensures fair play. Players organise themselves.

    • Trust your training — it will show in how you play.
    • When things go wrong, talk to your team-mates — solve it together.
    • Energy, intensity, and joy — that is Austin Hearts FC.

  5. 5. Small-Sided Game

    17m

Set up: Same 7v7 or 8v8 match continues — second half.

How to run it: Second half of the pre-festival match. Teams may reorganise at half-time. Coach gives each team captain 90 seconds of private feedback only — no group coaching.

    • Half-time is for the players — captains lead the team talk.
    • Coach feedback is a private gift — captain shares what they choose.
    • Play all the way to the final whistle — finish strong.

  6. 6. Cool-Down & Review

    5m

Set up: Full squad in a circle, everyone included.

How to run it: Group stretch led by a player. Coach ends the session with a personal message to each player — one quality they have shown this quarter. Close with the Austin Hearts FC club chant.

    • Acknowledging each player individually is the most important coaching moment of the quarter.
    • Every player has grown — make sure they know it.
🏠 Take-home challenge: Rest well and eat well before the festival. Think of one moment from this quarter that you are proud of. Be ready to share it with the group at the season finale.
