Outside Edge

Outside-of-foot dribbling

Objective: Players explore using the outside of the foot to push the ball away and dribble.

Outcomes

  • Players can push the ball forward using the outside of the foot.
  • Players can dribble in a curved path using outside-foot touches.
  • Players can combine outside and inside touches on the same dribble.

Equipment

  • 1 ball per player
  • 10 cones
  • 1 cone per player (small)

Run of show

  1. 1. Arrival Free Play

    5m

Set up: Grid with balls scattered.

How to run it: Arrive and explore: push the ball with the outside of your foot — that pinky-toe side. Try going left and right with it.

    • Let them discover the sensation — outside edge feels different.
    • Model it briefly if needed: foot turned slightly inward to hit outside.

  2. 2. Warm-Up Game: Curve Ball

    8m

Set up: Mark a large circle of cones (10 yards diameter). Players on the outside.

How to run it: Everyone dribbles around the circle using only outside-of-foot touches to curve the ball. Go clockwise, then anticlockwise. Race around: how many laps in 60 seconds?

    • Toes point slightly inward to engage the outside of the foot.
    • Ball stays on the circle line — don't drift in or out.
    • Both directions equally important.

  3. 3. Skill Theme Game: Outside Painter

    12m

Set up: Players each have a small cone. They place their cone anywhere in the grid and stand beside it.

How to run it: Players dribble to different cones using ONLY outside-of-foot touches. Each cone they reach, they 'paint' it by tapping it with their outside foot, then speed to the next. Count paints in 45 seconds, three rounds.

    • Each touch with the outside edge — feel the push.
    • Head up to find the next cone.
    • Alternate feet on different cones.

  4. 4. Small-Sided Games: 3v3 Outside Goals

    15m

Set up: Two 3v3 games. Goals scored from the left side of the pitch only count if using outside of right foot; goals from the right side must use outside of left foot.

How to run it: Play 3v3 with the outside-foot scoring zones. Normal goals count normally; outside-foot goals count double. Explain zones simply: left side = pinky of right foot; right side = pinky of left foot.

    • Players naturally start trying outside-foot — celebrate any attempt.
    • Don't force it — if they score normally, that's fine too.
    • Coaches demonstrate the outside-foot path to goal.

  5. 5. Cool-Down & High-Fives

    5m

    Set up: Seated circle.

How to run it: Push the ball gently with outside of right foot across to a partner — they push it back with outside of left foot. Do 5 exchanges. Name the skill: 'Outside of the foot!'

    • Reinforce both feet — not just the dominant one.
    • Preview: 'Next time we combine inside AND outside — you'll be unstoppable!'
🏠 Take-home challenge: Dribble from one end of your garden (or room) to the other using ONLY the outside of your foot. Try right foot first, then left!

Outside Edge Festival

Outside-of-foot dribbling — festival

Objective: Players combine inside and outside touches in dynamic games for fluid dribbling.

Outcomes

  • Players can choose inside or outside touch based on direction needed.
  • Players can dribble fluently using both surfaces of the foot.
  • Players can change surface of touch when dribbling under light pressure.

Equipment

  • 1 ball per player
  • 8 cones
  • 4 pinnies

Run of show

  1. 1. Arrival Free Play

    5m

Set up: Grid, one ball each.

How to run it: Free dribble — challenge: every 5 steps switch from inside to outside touch. Just try it!

    • Don't correct — exploration is the goal.
    • Watch who already combines naturally.

  2. 2. Warm-Up Game: Inside-Outside Rap

    8m

Set up: All players spread in the grid, each with a ball.

How to run it: Coach chants: 'IN-side, OUT-side, IN-side, OUT!' — players alternate inside and outside touches to the rhythm. Speed up the chant each round. Finish with 'FREEZE!' and sole-stop.

    • Rhythm helps — clap the beat if needed.
    • Feet alternate: inside left, outside left, inside right, outside right.
    • Keep it musical and fun.

  3. 3. Skill Theme Game: Two-Surface Slalom

    12m

Set up: Set up a cone slalom (5 cones, 2 yards apart). First cone = inside touch; next = outside; alternate.

How to run it: Dribble through the slalom using the specified surface at each cone. Odd cones = inside, even cones = outside. After two passes through, players can try to go faster.

    • Prepare the surface before reaching the cone.
    • Slow = better touch; speed comes later.
    • Clap when players nail the pattern.

  4. 4. Small-Sided Games: 4v4 Any-Touch Goals

    15m

Set up: One 4v4 game. Standard goals.

How to run it: Play 4v4. Coach announces 'INSIDE ROUND' — goals only count with inside-of-foot finish; or 'OUTSIDE ROUND' — outside foot finish only. Alternate every 90 seconds. Normal goals in between rounds.

    • Players start planning their approach to goal.
    • Celebrate the attempt, regardless of outcome.
    • No keeper — everyone involved.

  5. 5. Cool-Down & High-Fives

    5m

    Set up: Seated circle.

How to run it: Do 3 inside rolls left, 3 outside rolls left. Swap feet. Stand up and take a bow — you are now officially a two-surface dribbler!

    • Big celebration finish.
    • Confirm homework challenge.
🏠 Take-home challenge: Invent a dribble pattern using inside and outside touches and teach it to someone at home. Give your move a name!
