Shooting Stars

Shooting on the move — striking while in motion

Objective: Players practise approaching the ball from different angles and shooting while still moving.

Outcomes

  • Players can approach a rolling ball and shoot without stopping it first.
  • Players can time their stride to connect cleanly with a moving ball.
  • Players can follow up their own shot for a rebound goal.

Equipment

  • 1 size-3 ball per player
  • 6 small flat-cone goals
  • 16 cones
  • pinnies

Run of show

  1. 1. Arrival Free Play

    5m

Set up: Three goals positioned around the space. Players each have a ball.

How to run it: Players roll their ball forward a few steps, then jog after it and shoot when they catch it. Goal or no goal — reset and go again. Let them discover moving-ball shooting themselves.

    • Watch if players slow to a stop before shooting — this is fine for now.
    • Praise any player who shoots while still jogging.

  2. 2. Warm-Up Game: Meteor Shower

    8m

Set up: Players spread out in the area, each with a ball. One or two players are 'comets' without a ball.

How to run it: Comets run and try to kick players' balls out of the area. Players dribble to protect. If your ball leaves the area, do five toe-taps and return. Switch comet every 2 minutes.

    • Players should change direction quickly — small rapid touches.
    • Comets should run and kick, not hold or grab.
    • Praise players who shield cleverly.

  3. 3. Skill Theme Game: Moving Ball Madness

    12m

Set up: Pairs across from each other, 8 yards apart, with one small goal in the middle. One player rolls the ball toward the goal; their partner runs onto it and shoots.

How to run it: Player A rolls the ball forward toward the goal. Player B runs from the side and shoots it on the move. Count goals together. Switch roles every minute. Play four rounds.

    • Approach from an angle — not straight behind the ball.
    • Strike through the centre of the ball even when it's rolling.
    • Follow up the shot — rebounds count!

  4. 4. Small-Sided Games: 3v3 Moving Shots

    15m

Set up: Two 3v3 games. Goals each end. No goalkeeper. Rolling restarts only — no stationary kick-offs.

How to run it: Coach rolls the ball in to start each half. Players must shoot while moving — if a player stops to set up a shot, it doesn't count. Coach gently enforces with a thumbs-up or thumbs-down.

    • Don't be too strict — encourage the concept, not the letter of the law.
    • Praise any shot on goal regardless of moving or not — build confidence first.
    • Rotate teams every 5 minutes.

  5. 5. Cool-Down & High-Fives

    5m

Set up: Players find a partner and sit together.

How to run it: Partners take turns lightly rolling the ball to each other's feet. On the coach's clap, the player receiving shoots softly at a cone target. Five goes each. High-fives to finish.

    • Reinforce the feel of striking a ball that's already moving.
    • Gentle, playful energy for cool-down.
🏠 Take-home challenge: Roll a ball across your room or garden and run after it to kick it before it stops. How many can you do in a row?

On-the-Run Festival

Shooting on the move — mini-match festival

Objective: Players apply shooting-on-the-move in fast-paced mini-matches with quick transitions.

Outcomes

  • Players can shoot at goal after receiving a rolling pass.
  • Players can support teammates by making runs toward goal.
  • Players can restart quickly to keep the game exciting.

Equipment

  • 1 size-3 ball per player
  • 8 small flat-cone goals
  • 20 cones
  • 2 sets of pinnies

Run of show

  1. 1. Arrival Free Play

    5m

Set up: All goals out. Balls rolling freely — coach occasionally rolls a ball across the space.

How to run it: Players chase any rolling ball and shoot. Coach rolls new balls into the area constantly to create moving-ball opportunities. Pure chaos and fun.

    • Keep rolling balls in — the more moving balls, the better.
    • Celebrate every attempt at a moving shot.

  2. 2. Warm-Up Game: Animal Kingdom

    8m

Set up: All players with a ball in the open area.

How to run it: Coach calls an animal — players dribble like that animal. 'CHEETAH!' = sprint. 'ELEPHANT!' = big slow dribble stamping. 'CRAB!' = dribble sideways. 'KANGAROO!' = hop with the ball. Mix calls every 30 seconds.

    • Keep ball contact during all movements.
    • Laugh with the kids — join in yourself.
    • Transition: 'Now let's use those animal moves in our games!'

  3. 3. Skill Theme Game: Pass and Chase

    12m

Set up: Groups of three. Two feeders and one shooter per group. One small goal per group, 8 yards from the shooting spot.

How to run it: Feeder rolls the ball forward. Shooter sprints onto it and shoots. Immediately rotate: shooter becomes feeder, feeder becomes shooter. Count group goals in 2-minute rounds.

    • Shoot before the ball stops rolling.
    • Approach from the side to get laces contact.
    • Rotate fast — no waiting around.

  4. 4. Small-Sided Games: Mini-Match Festival

    15m

Set up: Three 3v3 or 4v4 games. Quick kick-in restarts from sideline. Goals each end.

How to run it: Play three 5-minute games. Coach adds a bonus: any goal scored from a running shot (player still moving when they kick) earns a bonus cheer from everyone. Rotate teams between games.

    • Bonus cheer is the reward — no extra points needed.
    • Let players police 'running shot' themselves.
    • Encourage follow-up runs after passes.

  5. 5. Cool-Down & High-Fives

    5m

Set up: Players jog slowly to collect one ball and bring it back.

How to run it: Players sit in a circle. Coach asks: 'What was your best shot today?' Each player mimes their shot. Team cheers after each mime. Finish with a group high-five stack.

    • Encourage imagination — even misses can be the 'best shot'.
    • High energy to end.
🏠 Take-home challenge: Ask someone to roll a ball to your feet and practise kicking it on the move — 10 times each foot!
