Defending Corners – Zonal & Man-Marking Hybrid

Defending Set Pieces – Corners

Objective: Players organise and execute a hybrid zonal/man-marking defensive system from corners, including second-phase and transition responsibilities.

Outcomes

  • Players can set up a 5-zone zonal block and a man-on-man marker for the near-post threat
  • Players can attack the ball in their zone with conviction and win the header
  • Players can clear the ball to a target outside the box rather than clearing blindly
  • Players can transition from a corner defence into a counter-attack within three seconds of a clearance

Equipment

  • 12 cones
  • 6 bibs (3 colours)
  • 4 balls
  • 2 full-size goals
  • 2 goalkeepers
  • 1 whiteboard + marker

Run of show

  1. 1. Activation & 11+ Warm-Up

    15m

Set up: Full squad along the 18-yard box. Cones mark zonal positions: near post, far post, penalty spot, central zone, edge of box.

How to run it: FIFA 11+ protocol, then a defensive heading warm-up: pairs throw-and-head (10 reps each, focus on attacking the ball). Coach demonstrates zonal box positions while players jog. Walk through the hybrid system once at 50% pace with no pressure: each player jogs to their zone on coach's call. Finish with two 20-yd acceleration runs.

    • Head the ball with the forehead; aim the clearance to the sides, not straight back
    • In your zone: the ball is yours – attack it, don't wait for it to come to you
    • Know your zone before the corner is taken – no confusion when the ball is in the air

  2. 2. Technical/Functional Practice – Corner Defence System Drill

    15m

Set up: Full-size goal with goalkeeper. Eight defenders set up in the hybrid system: 5 zonal, 1 near-post man-marker, 1 far-post cover, 1 second-ball at the edge of the box. Coach serves corners from each side.

How to run it: Coach serves in-swinging and out-swinging corners from both sides. Defenders hold their positions until the ball is struck, then attack the ball in their zone. After each clearance, the second-ball player receives the clearance and immediately plays a long pass toward the halfway line (simulating the counter-attack outlet). Run 10 corners from each side. Progress: add 4 attacking dummy players running through the zones.

    • Zonal players: step and attack the ball; don't retreat onto your heels
    • Near-post man-marker: stay goal-side and ball-side of the near-post runner at all times
    • Goalkeeper: take anything in the 6-yard box – command it loudly
    • Second-ball player: keep watching where attackers are outside the box for their second-phase runs

  3. 3. Skill/Phase Game – 9v9 Corner Defence

    15m

Set up: Full-size goal at one end. 9 attackers (corner takers + runners) vs 9 defenders. Alternate corners from each side.

How to run it: Attackers use the routines from Week 31. Defenders execute the hybrid system. Defenders earn 2 points for a headed clearance to the halfway line, 1 point for any clearance, and lose a point if they concede. Attackers earn 2 points for a goal, 1 point for an on-target attempt. Play 10 corners, then reverse roles.

    • Defenders: if your zone is empty, shift to support a teammate; don't stand in an unoccupied zone
    • After a clearance, transition immediately – don't reset into a corner defence if the ball is in play
    • Attacking team: use decoy runs before the real runner to stress the zonal system

  4. 4. Conditioned Tactical Game – Corner Focus Match

    20m

Set up: Full 60×44 yd pitch. 9v9 with goalkeepers. Every 5 minutes, coach awards a corner to the team who is behind (or alternates if level).

How to run it: Normal 9v9 play with regular corners plus coach-awarded corners. Defending team must execute the hybrid system on every corner. Goals from corners count double (both for and against). Coach uses one freeze to diagnose a defensive breakdown: 'Who left their zone? What happened next?'

    • Organisation speed: hybrid system must be set within 10 seconds of the corner being awarded
    • Goalkeeper: position at the back post on an in-swinging corner; near post on an out-swinging corner
    • Attackers: read the defensive system and target any player who is late to their zone
    • Second-ball player on the edge: stay out of the box; don't drift in and leave the second ball unguarded

  5. 5. Scrimmage – Free Play

    15m

Set up: Full pitch, 9v9, goalkeepers.

How to run it: Open scrimmage. Coach observes corner defensive organisation from naturally occurring corners.

    • Are players self-organising into the hybrid system?
    • Is the goalkeeper communicating loudly?

  6. 6. Cool-Down & Debrief

    5m

    Set up: Circle, static stretching.

How to run it: Stretching while reviewing the hybrid system. Ask each player to name their zone by memory. Coach highlights one excellent second-phase transition from the session.

    • Reinforce: defending corners is about courage, organisation, and attacking the ball
    • Preview Session 2: defending free kicks
🏠 Take-home challenge: Study the defensive corner system used by Heart of Midlothian (or any team in a recent professional match) and note whether they use zonal, man-marking, or a hybrid approach.

Defending Free Kicks – Wall Organisation & Runner Tracking

Defending Set Pieces – Free Kicks

Objective: Players organise a defensive wall, track set-piece runners, and transition quickly after a free-kick defence.

Outcomes

  • Players can set a legal, well-positioned defensive wall within 10 seconds of a free kick being awarded
  • Players can track the movement of set-piece runners from the wall outward without losing sight of the ball
  • Players can clear a deflected or saved free kick with urgency and play the ball back toward their own keeper or out wide
  • Players can transition from a free-kick defence into a counter-attack within three seconds

Equipment

  • 10 cones
  • 1 foam wall (or 4 poles)
  • 4 bibs (2 colours)
  • 4 balls
  • 2 full-size goals
  • 2 goalkeepers

Run of show

  1. 1. Activation & 11+ Warm-Up

    15m

Set up: Two lines of 6 in a 30×20 yd grid.

How to run it: FIFA 11+ warm-up, then a wall-jump drill: four players form a wall, striker plays a ball low through their feet, wall players must jump in unison at the call of the goalkeeper. 10 reps, focusing on jump timing. Finish with two 25-yd sprint accelerations.

    • Wall players: jump as a unit – one second delay by any player creates a gap
    • Goalkeeper calls 'jump' on the striker's plant foot, not when the ball is struck
    • Stand close together in the wall – no gaps for the ball to slide through

  2. 2. Technical/Functional Practice – Wall Setup & Runner Tracking

    15m

Set up: Full-size goal with goalkeeper. Free kick positions at 5 different distances and angles, marked with cones. Four wall players plus 4 runners tracked by 4 man-markers.

How to run it: Goalkeeper positions the wall (first player must cover the near post). Wall is set at 9.15 m. Four tracking defenders pick up four runners. Coach serves a free kick from each position (in sequence). Wall jumps on keeper's call. Trackers follow their runners and defend any second-ball. Coach freezes once to show a gap in the wall or a misassigned tracker.

    • Goalkeeper: stand 1 yd off the centre of the goal toward the side not covered by the wall
    • Wall leader (outermost player): your shoulder must cover the near post – goalkeeper confirms from behind
    • Tracker: stay goal-side of your runner, looking at both the ball and the runner simultaneously
    • After the kick: if the keeper saves it, clear it immediately – don't dwell on the ball near the box
  3. 3. Skill/Phase Game – 9v9 Free Kick Defence

    15m

Set up: Full-size goal with goalkeeper. 9 attackers (free kick team) vs 9 defenders. Free kicks from the three most dangerous zones: central 22–25 yds, left angle 20 yds, right angle 20 yds.

How to run it: Attackers use their Week 31 free-kick routines. Defenders set the wall and track runners. Defenders earn 2 points for a clean clearance to the halfway line, 1 point for any clearance, lose a point if they concede. Attackers earn 2 points for a goal, 1 point for an on-target attempt. 5 free kicks per position.

    • Wall communication: goalkeeper names the wall leader clearly and immediately
    • Runners off the free kick must be tracked before the kick, not after
    • Second-phase players outside the box: stay alive – deflections and rebounds are dangerous

  4. 4. Conditioned Tactical Game – Set Piece Defence in Match

    20m

Set up: Full 60×44 yd pitch. 9v9 with goalkeepers. Coach awards free kicks every 5 minutes in a dangerous zone.

How to run it: Normal 9v9 with coach-awarded free kicks every 5 minutes. Defending team organises a wall and trackers within 10 seconds. Goals from free kicks count double (both teams). Coach freezes once per half to assess wall/tracker quality and give one correction. Resume play quickly.

    • Organisational speed is a habit – teams that set the wall quickly concede fewer set-piece goals
    • Don't watch the kick and forget the runners – two eyes on the runner after the wall is set
    • After the free kick is cleared, the transition counter-attack is immediate
    • Goalkeeper: if the free kick goes wide or over, restart quickly with a short kick-out to begin the counter

  5. 5. Scrimmage – Free Play

    15m

Set up: Full pitch, 9v9, goalkeepers.

How to run it: Open scrimmage. Coach observes wall organisation from naturally occurring fouls and notes quality of runner tracking.

    • Are players auto-organising the wall without prompting?
    • Does the goalkeeper command the wall with authority?
    GKGK12312
Small-sided game with goalkeepersKeeperAttackerBallDefenderPassDribble (with ball)Shot
  6. 6. Cool-Down & Debrief

    5m

    Set up: Circle, static stretching.

How to run it: Light stretching. Coach summarises the two-week set-piece block (Weeks 31–33): 'Set pieces decide close games. We are now organised on both sides of every restart.' Name one defensive highlight from the session.

    • Reinforce: the wall protects the goalkeeper; the trackers protect the wall
    • Preview next week: counter-attacking from set pieces
🏠 Take-home challenge: Before the next session, write down (or memorise) your position in the corner defence AND free-kick wall. Bring it to the next session to confirm it with your coach.
