Defensive Shape – Compactness & Line Management

Game-Model Mastery – Organised Defence

Objective: Players maintain a compact, connected defensive block that shifts as a unit and denies space in behind.

Outcomes

  • Players can hold a back-line that stays within 10 yds of the defensive midfield line
  • Players can shift the entire block to the ball side within two seconds of a wide switch
  • Players can identify when to step to press versus when to hold shape and delay
  • Players can communicate the defensive line height verbally during live play

Equipment

  • 14 cones
  • 4 poles or mannequins
  • 4 bibs (2 colours)
  • 3 balls
  • 1 whiteboard + marker
  • 2 goals

Run of show

  1. 1. Activation & 11+ Warm-Up

    15m

Set up: Players in a single file line on the 18-yard line. Cones mark a 25×20 yd rectangle.

How to run it: Run 11+ protocol: high-knee jog, backward skipping, lateral crossovers, and single-leg balance with a partner push. Add a reactive drill: coach holds coloured bibs – red = backpedal into defensive shape (4-4 block), blue = sprint forward as a press unit. Finish with two 30-yd defensive-retreat sprint sets.

    • On the backpedal, maintain eye contact with a teammate to hold line width
    • On the sprint forward, first player calls the line to ensure everyone is level
    • Land in an athletic defensive stance – weight on toes, arms ready

Press as a unit — pressure the ball, cut passing lanesDefenderBallAttackerRun (off ball)
  2. 2. Technical/Functional Practice – Defensive Block Shifting

    15m

Set up: 40×30 yd grid. Six defenders in a 4-2 block. Four attackers pass the ball around the perimeter. Cones mark 'zones' – central, left channel, right channel.

How to run it: Coach calls a zone; the defenders must shift their block to close that zone within two seconds without breaking the compact shape. After each shift, coach checks the inter-player distance (no more than 5 yds between adjacent defenders). Progress: attackers can now play real passes, defenders must react to ball movement rather than coach calls.

    • First defender nearest the ball becomes the reference point for the whole block
    • Nearest midfielder to the ball tucks in centrally – do not ball-watch from far side
    • Back line must move as one – any late shift creates a gap behind
    • Verbal command: ball-side player calls 'shift' so the far side moves simultaneously

  3. 3. Skill/Phase Game – 7v7 Compact Block Transition

    15m

Set up: 50×35 yd grid, two small goals at each end. Teams of 7 (4+2+1 defensive shape vs. 3-3-1 attacking shape). Coach starts each rep with a ball to the attacking team.

How to run it: Attacking team attempts to score in either small goal. Defending team earns a point for every 10 seconds it maintains its compact shape without conceding a shot. If defending team wins the ball, they transition to attack immediately and can score in either goal. Play 5-minute rounds; alternate defensive/attacking roles.

    • Resist the urge to step out unless a clear pressing trigger is present
    • On transition, back four holds briefly to prevent being caught in the press
    • Number of steps to cover the channel: maximum three before a decision

  4. 4. Conditioned Tactical Game – 9v9 Defensive Shape Challenge

    20m

Set up: 65×45 yd pitch, goalkeepers in, 9v9. One team is designated 'defenders' for the first 10 minutes and earns double points if they keep a clean sheet.

How to run it: Standard 9v9 match. Defending team earns 3 pts for a clean sheet over 10 minutes, 1 pt for each goal prevented in transition. Attacking team earns 2 pts per goal. Swap roles at 10 minutes. Coach pauses play twice per role to address block height or compactness with a freeze-frame question.

    • Freeze-frame: 'Where is the gap? Who needs to step across to close it?'
    • If attacker beats the first defender, second and third must cover immediately
    • Compact block should only widen at set-piece restarts – then compress again

  5. 5. Scrimmage – Free 9v9

    15m

Set up: Same 65×45 yd pitch, normal free play.

How to run it: Free match. Coach observes defensive shape quality without intervention. Note two or three moments of excellent compactness or line management to reference in debrief.

    • Look for players self-correcting without coach instruction
    • Note any channel that was repeatedly exploited – address in session 2
  6. 6. Cool-Down & Debrief

    5m

Set up: Circle cool-down with static stretches.

How to run it: 90-second stretch (hip flexors, quads, calves – key for defenders). Debrief question: 'What was the signal that told you to hold versus press today?' Take two responses and connect to the game model.

    • Affirm correct decision-making, not just successful outcomes
    • Preview week 41 session 2: applying defensive shape under match-state scenarios
🏠 Take-home challenge: Stand in front of a mirror and practice your defensive stance for 2 minutes: feet shoulder-width, weight on toes, arms slightly out, eyes level. Visualise sliding across to close the channel.
Session 285 min

Defensive Scenarios – Match-State Defending

Game-Model Mastery – Organised Defence

Objective: Players adapt defensive organisation to match-state conditions: protecting a lead, defending a corner, and dealing with a late attack.

Outcomes

  • Players can recognise and communicate the match-state context to adjust defensive intensity
  • Players can execute a retreat-and-hold strategy when protecting a lead
  • Players can defend corners with a zonal or man-marking system consistently
  • Players can deny a late equaliser by prioritising shape over individual duels

Equipment

  • 12 cones
  • 4 bibs (2 colours)
  • 3 balls
  • 2 goals
  • 1 whiteboard + marker

Run of show

  1. 1. Activation & 11+ Warm-Up

    15m

Set up: Two lines of 6 facing each other, 5 yds apart across the pitch.

How to run it: Run abbreviated 11+ (jog, hip circles, lateral hops, single-leg balance, calf raise, two sprint sets). Add a decision-making warm-up game: coach calls a score (e.g. 'winning 1-0, 5 minutes left') – players must instantly organise into a defensive shape by position. Call three different match-states and observe the self-organisation quality.

    • Winning: drop into compact mid/low block, no unnecessary pressing
    • Drawing: balanced shape, press on trigger only
    • Losing: aggressive press to win ball high

  2. 2. Technical/Functional Practice – Corner Defending Zonal Setup

    15m

Set up: Full goal and 18-yard box. Eight defenders take zonal positions: two on posts, two at the 6-yard box corners, four at the edge of the 6-yard box. Attackers take corners from both sides.

How to run it: Coach crosses corners from the left and right. Defenders must hold their zones, attack the ball when it enters their zone, and clear with height and distance. Run 12 corners (6 per side). Progress: add two attackers peeling to the edge of the box to test the 'second ball' defenders.

    • Jump to meet the ball at its highest point – do not wait for it to drop
    • Nearest post defender is responsible for any ball inside the six – call it loudly
    • After a clear, immediately transition to defend a potential second ball
    • Goalkeeper commands: 'mine', 'away', 'keeper' – defenders must react instantly

  3. 3. Skill/Phase Game – Protect the Lead (8v8 with Scenario)

    15m

Set up: 60×40 yd pitch, goalkeepers in, 8v8. Defending team starts with a notional 1-0 lead with 10 minutes to play.

How to run it: Defending team scores by maintaining possession for 12 consecutive passes (simulates running the clock). Attacking team scores by putting the ball in the goal. If the defending team loses possession, they must immediately reset their defensive shape. Play two 7-minute rounds, swapping roles at half-time.

    • Defending team: no risky passes – keep it simple, use the goalkeeper
    • Shape first: never leave a gap in behind for a counter-attack
    • Communicate the count aloud so all ten outfield players know the possession total
    GKSA
Receive the pass, attack the goal, finishKeeperNeutral / serverBallAttackerConePassRun (off ball)Shot
  4. 4. Conditioned Tactical Game – Match-State Gauntlet

    20m

Set up: Full 65×45 yd pitch, goalkeepers in, 9v9. Whiteboard shows three 7-minute scenarios: (1) level with 7 mins left, (2) winning 1-0 with 7 mins left, (3) losing 1-0 with 7 mins left.

How to run it: Play through all three scenarios in sequence. Winning team in each scenario earns a point. Coach reads the scenario before each restart and calls 'freeze' once per scenario to ask players how the scenario changes their defensive or attacking posture. Scenario 3 ends the session and leads into the debrief.

    • Scenario awareness must change before the whistle – not after a goal is conceded
    • In scenario 2 (winning): defend deeper, limit transitions, keep shape
    • In scenario 3 (losing): press higher, take more risk in possession, but stay organised
    • Leader on the pitch must verbalise the scenario to the team at each restart
  5. 5. Scrimmage – Free Play

    15m

Set up: Same pitch, free play from a kick-off.

How to run it: Open free match. After 8 minutes, coach calls a scenario ('you are now winning/losing by one goal') mid-match to test real-time scenario adaptation without stopping play.

    • Observe whether the team self-organises on the scenario call or waits for instruction
    • Individual note: which player communicates the scenario change to the group?

  6. 6. Cool-Down & Debrief

    5m

Set up: Circle stretch, seated cool-down.

How to run it: Lead 90-second cool-down (hamstrings, hip flexors, shoulders). Debrief: 'What changed in your mentality between scenario 1 and scenario 3?' Take three answers. Close with a team cultural statement about resilience under pressure.

    • Link match-state awareness to emotional regulation – it's a mental skill as much as tactical
    • Preview week 42: transition moments (attack to defence, defence to attack)
🏠 Take-home challenge: Watch a 5-minute clip of your favourite professional team defending a lead. Write down three specific defensive decisions they made in the last 5 minutes. Share at next session.
